It’s almost that time—May in Cincinnati, when residents finally stash their combination snow parkas/rain slickers and reveal the cherry red, sequined dance ensembles hidden underneath. That’s because Salsa on the Square is about to begin. We’re excited to be designing t-shirts for the 10th anniversary of this free event, which takes place every Thursday from May 3 – September 27.
Salsa on the Square represents so much we love about Cincinnati: the rich diversity of culture, the arts, and the strong sense of community that brings all kinds of people together on a warm Thursday evening to listen to live music, eat a Mazunte taco or five, and learn how to cha cha, tango or merengue.
Since this is such a fun event to be involved with, we decided to let four of our designers take a stab at designing the t-shirt—so we need you to vote for your favorite. Take a look at the choices below and read each designer’s thoughts on the design, then join us on Salsa on the Square’s Facebook page to cast your vote.
DESIGN A: “Cuban Cubism,” by Mike
This t-shirt design was built to reflect and celebrate the origins of salsa dancing in Cuba, featuring a bold color palette commonly found in Cuban architecture. The playful, slightly retro typeface was inspired by graphic mid-century jazz and samba posters. Mike merged the two styles together, and the result was a unique look that commemorates a hell of a good time on Fountain Square.
DESIGN B: “Floral Fantastico” by Qiana
Salsa on the Square is more than just a gathering of people dancing in the same spot. It’s about exposing Cincinnatians to a vibrant culture in the heart of the city. Under the city skyline and the welcoming Genius of Water, the “Square” anchors the design. Dancing through the Square are some of the native flowers from the influential regions where Latin music was born. Together, they make an already exciting city shine brighter.
DESIGN C: “Salsa Explosion,” by Mandy
This style captures the essence and energy of a summer on the Square! Celebrating both the musical and cultural aspects of Salsa on the Square, this color-drenched design echoes the vibrancy, energy and spirit of salsa’s Cuban roots.
DESIGN D: “The Genius of Salsa,” by Susan
This flowing design was inspired by the image of a carefree summer evening surrounded by live Latin music and a huge dance class in the heart of the city. Surrounded by energy, even the statue atop Fountain Square’s most famous icon—known as “The Genius of Water”—can’t resist those Latin beats and that Caribbean flare.
We know, we know. It’s so hard to choose! That’s why we’re depending on the hive mind to come through for us. Choose your favorite on Facebook by April 26. The winning design will be available at the event! Vamos a bailar!
